Nearfield monitors

Near-field monitors are designed for listening at close range, usually one to two metres from the listener. They minimise the influence of room acoustics and provide a direct and precise reproduction of the sound. Near-field monitors are ideal for mixing, editing and mastering in small to medium-sized studios, as they provide a neutral and reliable reference without the room’s acoustics significantly affecting the sound.

Midfield monitors

Mid-field monitors are used in larger control rooms, where the listener sits slightly further away from the speakers. They offer wider coverage and an accurate reproduction of bass, midrange and treble across a larger listening area. Mid-field monitors are suitable for professional music production, broadcast environments and larger studios where uniform sound reproduction is required across the entire listening area.

Subwoofers

Subwoofers complement the low-frequency range and make the full spectrum of sound audible. They are essential in situations where controlled and consistent bass reproduction is important, such as music production, broadcast and post-production. Modern subwoofers can be digitally adjusted to work perfectly with the main monitors, ensuring that all frequencies sound accurate and consistent.

Actieve monitors

Active monitors feature a built-in amplifier and are often the most user-friendly option for studios. They can be connected directly to an audio interface or mixing console, and are generally optimised for accurate sound reproduction. Active systems do not require an additional amplifier and are easy to use.

Passieve monitors

Passive monitors require an external amplifier. This offers flexibility in larger setups or where bespoke amplification is required. Passive systems can be easily adapted to specific room and power requirements, and are suitable for situations where operators or engineers wish to fully control their amplification and configuration.

Rack monitors

Rack monitors are compact monitors suitable for installation in racks or streamlined control rooms. They offer the same neutral and accurate reproduction as near-field and mid-field studio speakers, but take up less space. Rack monitors are ideal for broadcast environments, mobile studios or situations where a neat, compact solution is required. They allow operators and producers to work reliably, even in smaller or confined spaces.

How do you choose the right monitor solution?

Choosing monitors depends on the room, the type of production and the desired level of detail. Key factors include the size of the listening room, the type of work being carried out, the distance from the monitors, the need for subwoofers to cover the full frequency range, and a preference for active or passive systems. For small studios or home studios, near-field monitors are often sufficient, possibly supplemented with a subwoofer. Medium-sized studios and control rooms benefit from mid-field monitors combined with a subwoofer. Broadcast environments or compact spaces benefit from rack monitors, possibly combined with subwoofers and digital adjustment of frequencies and phase. Large control rooms or immersive setups often use multiple midfield monitors with subwoofers for full and accurate coverage of the sound spectrum.
