The RB-SD1 silence detection unit is a 1Urack-mount device used to monitor anunattended stereo studio feed and in theevent of the signal going quiet after agiven period the unit will switch through analternative stereo audio signal. This signalcould be a recorded message (e.g. normalservice will be resumed, etc), a feed from aCD player or minidisc machine, or analternative recorded programme. Controlsare provided to start external equipmentand to provide remote status indication. It has 2 balanced stereo audio inputs withthe maximum input level being +28dBu.Each input is user-defined as either themain source or auxiliary source and bothsources are monitored for failure, eachhaving a remote failure alarm. In the eventof the main source dropping below a presetlevel for a pre-determined amount oftime, the unit will automatically switchthrough to the auxiliary signal. The silencedetect level is adjustable between -60dBuand -15dBu in 3dB steps via a 16 positionrotary switch on the rear panel. The silenceinterval can be adjusted between 2seconds to 30 seconds in 2 second steps, or,alternatively, set to 2 minutes 5 secondsalso via a 16 position rotary switch on therear panel. The audio outputs use stereoprofessional balanced XLR-3 maleconnectors. The unit can operate in 2 modes -automatic or manual. In both modes it willautomatically switch over to the auxiliarysource on detecting silence. When the mainsignal is again detected it will either returnto the main signal automatically or manuallydepending on the mode chosen. The RB-SD1has a number of remote operationalfeatures. Remote outputs provide separaterelay contact closures for failure of the mainand auxiliary inputs. You can also controlremotely all of the front panel switches forsource selection, mode selection and signalRestore. You can remotely start and stopanother piece of equipment on alarm failureand main signal Restore respectively. Also, the longest silence time (2min 5sec) can beset remotely, which is useful if you areexpecting to broadcast a long silence. The unit can be configured to alarm wheneither the left or right channel of the maininput source fails, or if the whole stereo signal fails. There are also options to set theremote start output as momentary orlatched, to disable switching to the auxiliaryinput on alarming and to increase the gainon the auxiliary input so that an unbalancedinput can be used, for example, from adomestic minidisc player.Front panel LED indicators show individuallyleft and right programme and alarmconditions for both the main and auxiliaryinputs. The status of the source, mode andalarm state are also shown on the frontpanel with LED indicators.Additionally, the RB-SD1 can beprogrammed for specific applications whichcan be defined on power-up of the unit.Contact Sonifex for further information ifyou have a particular requirement. (Refer tothe handbook on the website forinformation on current configurations). The RB-SD1 has been designed to have apassive signal path through the main input,so if power to the unit fails, the signal inputwill still be routed through to the output. This is essential for applications such asinstallation at transmitter sites, where apower failure to the unit should not preventthe audio input signal from being output tothe transmitter.
